What is Guna Milan?

Guna Milan, also known as Kundli Matching or Ashtakoota matching, is a traditional Vedic astrology system used to evaluate the compatibility between a bride and groom before marriage. Originating from the ancient sage Narada, this system assigns scores across eight categories (Kootas) totaling 36 points.

Each of the eight Kootas examines a specific dimension of compatibility — from emotional connection and physical attraction to spiritual alignment and financial harmony. A minimum score of 18 out of 36 is traditionally considered acceptable for marriage, though higher scores indicate greater harmony.

Our Guna Milan calculator performs a detailed Ashtakoota analysis of both partners' birth charts. It evaluates Varna (caste), Vashya (attraction), Tara (birth star), Yoni (nature), Graha Maitri (planetary friendship), Gana (temperament), Bhakoot (love), and Nadi (health compatibility) to provide a comprehensive compatibility report.

How It Works

The science and methodology behind the calculations.

Ashtakoota Scoring System

The 36-point system is divided into eight Kootas: Varna (1 point) for spiritual compatibility, Vashya (2 points) for mutual attraction, Tara (3 points) for destiny alignment, Yoni (4 points) for sexual compatibility, Graha Maitri (5 points) for intellectual harmony, Gana (6 points) for temperament, Bhakoot (7 points) for love and progeny, and Nadi (8 points) for health and genetics.

Nadi Compatibility

Nadi is the most important Koota, carrying 8 points. It examines the Nakshatra groups of both partners. If both partners belong to the same Nadi (Aadi, Madhya, or Antya), it is considered a dosha (defect) that may indicate health or genetic compatibility issues.

Manglik Dosh Analysis

Beyond the 36-point system, our matching tool also checks for Manglik Dosh — a significant factor in Vedic marriage compatibility. Mars placed in certain houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th) creates Manglik Dosh, which can be neutralized through careful matching.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this tool.

A score of 18 out of 36 or higher is traditionally considered acceptable for marriage. Scores above 24 indicate excellent compatibility, while scores above 30 are rare and indicate a deeply harmonious union.

Yes. While the Guna Milan score is an important indicator, it is not the sole determinant of marital success. Other factors such as mutual respect, communication, family support, and individual chart analysis also play crucial roles.

Nadi Dosha occurs when both partners have the same Nadi (Aadi, Madhya, or Antya). It is considered the most serious dosha in Kundli matching, potentially indicating health issues for children. Remedies include specific pujas and mantras.

Guna Milan is a strong indicator of natural compatibility but does not guarantee a happy marriage. It shows the inherent energetic harmony between two people. Conscious effort, communication, and mutual understanding are equally important.
